Wire Gauge Reference Table (AWG)

All Gauge measurements throughout this website are American Wire Gauge (AWG). Gauges stocked are highlighted below in bold. Diameter information in the table applies to solid wires only. Stranded wire gauges should be measured by calculating the equivalent cross sectional copper area. First, measure the bare diameter of a single strand and locate the circular mils value in the row that matches your measurement. Second, multiply the circular mils by the number of strands in the cable. Lastly, locate the row in the table with the circular mils number that most closely matches your calculation.

American Wire Gauge (AWG) is a system of numerical wire sizes that start with the lowest numbers (6/0) for the largest sizes. The gauge sizes are each 26% apart based on the cross sectional area. AWG is also known as Brown & Sharpe Gage.

SWG = Standard or Sterling Wire Gauge, a British wire measurement system.

BWG = Birmingham Wire Gauge, an old British wire measurement system that was widely used throughout the world.

Cir Mils or CMA = Circular Mil Area which is equal to 1/1000 (0.001) of an inch in diameter or 0.000507 MM.
